Excerpt

Rudy, leaning on the table next to him with his head in his hands, asked, “So what did Nipron do?”

“Nipron became depressed and didn’t keep up with taking care of Lusair. You know he is a questor, meaning he takes care of our land and makes sure that everything works together as it should.

“That’s when everything started to change. The beautiful forests became gloomy forests. Our green valleys are now

dark and foreboding. Our jungles are teaming with nauseating disease and rot.

“People are looking for caves and underground caverns to live in. I need help to get Dinky and Nipron back together.”

Josey was sure they could help, and it wouldn’t take long, either. “We’ll just go get Nipron. We’ll head to the Smoking Mountains and ask Dinky to return. It’s not rocket science.”

Rudy lifted his head, swiveled in his chair, and looked at Josey. “Nothing is ever easy in Lusair.”

“Come on, Rudy. We’ve been through a lot worse. It won’t be so bad getting those two back together,” said Billy.

A voice underneath the table said, “I wouldn’t count on it.”

Everyone was quiet. B-Whiz’s face turned red, then purple, as if he were ready to explode. He dragged Purloin out from under the table. “How in the Lusair did you get in here?”

Purloin freed himself and scurried over to stand next to Billy. He pulled a key out of his pocket to show everyone.

B-Whiz’s eyes popped open wide. He removed his hat and looked inside, “My key is missing. How did you get my key?” He stomped over to Purloin and grabbed the key. “Aha, it is mine!  See that ‘B’ scratched into it?”

Purloin moved closer to Billy, “I just borrowed it. I heard the Knight of Light tell you to get Josey, Rudy, and Billy. I just wanted to be here when they came.”

B-Whiz's face turned purple again. “This is not a happy gathering. There is real trouble in the land, and I don’t need a thieving tag-along. We have serious problems to discuss.”

Purloin shuffled his feet and said, “You will never get through the Nauseating Jungle or the Valley of Grief or past the Schnecka without my help.”

B-Whiz knew everything about anything. But he didn’t know anything about the Schnecka. “You’re making Schnecka up. I’ve never heard of such a thing.”

Josey jumped up and went to stand by Purloin. “I bet he’s right. We needed his help in the past. Remember, we were trapped in a huge cage. That Old Delf had trapped us twice and was trying to steal the queen’s power.” She turned to B-Whiz, “There was no way out. We thought all was lost.

“We were sitting there trying to figure out what to do. All of a sudden, gold coins were disappearing. Rudy grabbed and pulled on one before it disappeared completely. Guess who was on the other end?”

B-Whiz huffed, “Purloin, of course, always stealing…”
