Tame That Flame - Excerpt
Tomtee yelled, “Run! Run for your lives!”
They all ran. Rudy turned to look and saw a giant bear breaking out of the tree as though it was born from it. He heard the thump, thump, thump, and roaring as the bear neared them. His foot caught on a stone, and Rudy fell face-first. Turning over, he was certain he was going to die, as the bear was so close that he could feel its breath. Tuk came out of nowhere, jumped over Rudy’s head, and attacked the bear. Rudy got up and ran and ran. He heard Tuk and the bear roar and growl and crash into each other. He caught up with everyone and then passed them all. They didn’t stop running until Tomtee did. They collapsed in a pile, panting and sweating.
Josey rolled on her back with her knees raised, trying to catch her breath. “Was that a real bear? How did it emerge from that tree like that?”
They heard something running toward them. Rudy was the first on his feet. “We gotta go. It caught up with us.”
Tomtee yelled, “Stop! It’s only Tuk catching up with us.”
Rudy saw Tuk coming around the bend and ran to him. He grabbed Tuk’s head in his arms and laid his head on the wolf’s. He whispered as tears leaked from his eyes, “I thought I was going to die. Thank you, Tuk.”
Tuk didn’t say a word, just nuzzled Rudy, and then they rejoined the group.
Tomtee asked, “What was that thing? What kind of magic is that?”
“It’s an old magic that traps animals and people who are in a rage. They become encased in rock or trees or whatever is nearby. When the right trigger comes along and they are freed, they will try to destroy whatever is close to them. It’s called a ‘tramprage’ spell and lasts for a minute. Longer than that, and I would not have been able to hold the bear off.”
“What was the trigger? What happened to the bear?” asked Purloin.
“A trigger can be someone or something else that is full of anger. The bear ran off.”
Billy grew very nervous, for he felt he had that kind of rage in himself. “Can that happen to us?”
Tuk went over to Billy and sat in front of him. “Yes, and that is why when we get to the Blue Mountains, we need to guard our thoughts.”
Billy's thoughts were tumbling around in his head. Maybe I shouldn’t go to the mountains. I need to get a grip on my anger. Will I be frozen in a tree? His thoughts were interrupted by Tomtee.
